Thursday Lunchtime Concert – Hatty Haynes, Charlie Woof-Byrne

Hatty Haynes is a violinist enjoying a varied musical life performing as a recitalist, chamber and orchestral musician on both modern and historical instruments. She is a member of the 1st violins of the London Mozart Players, where she has sat as co-leader and Principal 2nd Violin. She regularly plays with Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields, La Serenissima and Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique.

She has performed in venues including Wigmore Hall, Barbican, Royal Albert Hall, Salzburg Großen Festspielhauses, Suntory Hall and the Berlin Philharmonie. Chamber music plays a vital role in Hatty’s musical life, and she is currently focusing on duo partnerships and her piano trio, Trio Cordiera. She was previously the 1st Violinist of the Gildas Quartet, with whom she performed a memorised performance of Britten’s 2nd Quartet at Kings Place ‘Sound Unwrapped’ Festival, and also appeared at Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpormmen and Lake District Summer Music Festival. Hatty has also collaborated with artists including Alexander Melnikov, Andrew Marriner, Levon Chilingirian, Emma  Johnson, Jess Gillam and Milos Karadaglic, and has performed with Consone and Eusebius Quartets.

From 2020-21, Hatty held a fellowship at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where she completed her Masters degree with Distinction in 2020. Prior to this, Hatty gained a 1st Class Bachelor of Music (Honours) from the Royal Academy of Music. Her studies were generously supported by Help Musicians UK, the Countess of Munster Musical Trust, the Tillett Trust, Thompson Educational Trust and the Craxton Memorial Trust.

During her studies at RAM, Hatty was awarded the J&A Beare Bow prize which is awarded annually to the most promising graduating student in the strings department. She was also the recipient of numerous awards including the Waddell Prize, John Waterhouse Prize, Amadeus Prize, Sir John Barbirolli Prize and the Wolfe Wolfinsohn String Quartet Prize.

Hatty has studied with Krysia Osostowicz, Stephanie Gonley, So-Ock Kim, and Nicolette Moonen and Pavlo Beznosiuk (baroque violin). She was invited to IMS Prussia Cove to study with Andras Keller, and has benefitted greatly from coaching with Alasdair Beatson, Catherine Manson and Christoph Richter via Chamberstudio mentorships and the Britten Pears Young Artist Programme. She is incredibly grateful to the Albert Cooper Trust, Lumbs Foundation, Kathleen Trust and the Stephen Bell Trust for their support.

 

Charlie Woof-Byrne is an acclaimed chamber pianist based in London. He is in demand playing with both instrumentalists and singers, and has performed at many prestigious UK venues including Kings Place, St Martin-in-the-Fields, The Purcell Room, St Georges’ Bristol, St James’ Piccadilly, Milton Court, and the Bristol Beacon.

In 2024 he was invited by Iain Burnside and Rebecca Nicholls to be a Chamber Soloist at the St Endellion Summer Festival in Cornwall where he performed with esteemed instrumentalists including Thomas Bowes (Maggini Quartet, LMP), Joely Koos (ESO) and Lynsey Marsh (Hallé Orchestra Principal). He also performed Lied and English Song with highly acclaimed singers including Elizabeth Watts (ROH), Gareth Brynmor John (WNO), Felicity Buckland (ENO) and Isabelle Peters (ENO). He has subsequently been invited back for the 2025 season, and has also been invited to play with the London Conchord Ensemble.

Charlie was invited by Graham Johnson to be part of the Song Guild 2024, and was the sole recipient of the Paul Hamburger Award for Outstanding Pianism, for his interpretation of Wolf Lieder at Milton Court Hall, London. Other recent awards include the Dennis Horner Accompanist Prize at the Kathleen Ferrier Society 2024.

He was a scholar at the Royal Academy of Music where he received a First Class Bachelor of Music and was taught by Christopher Elton and Carole Presland. He then pursued his postgraduate studies as a scholar at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, where he studied with Julius Drake. Charlie has worked with many other acclaimed musicians including Alasdair Beatson, Ralf Guthoni, Amandine Savary, Michael Dussek, Alistair Hogarth, Andrew West, Garfield Jackson, Ronan O’Hora, Annabelle Lawson, Catherine Manson and Tessa Nicholson.
