The idea of this concert series «Hidden Gems» derived from the stature of St Mary Le Strand itself. Right in the heart of the city’s most vibrant district, it is still quite hidden and surprisingly lesser-known than it should be. Violinist Anna Ovsyanikova, who has a personal connection with the church, regularly performs as soloist and recitalist as well as an orchestral musician, working with orchestras such as Royal Opera House and BBC Concert Orchestra. She is also doing a PhD at the Royal College of Music, where she’s researching the legacy of a virtually unknown composer Mathieu Crickboom. Together with her colleagues – all freelance London musicians working with leading orchestras – she brings a unique programme of unusual but brilliant classical music pieces, hidden gems, together with some well-loved music. There is music by Ukrainian composer Skoryk, Georgian composer Otar Taktakishvili, Chopin and Liszt, unknown Belgian composer Crickboom and female composer Mel Bonis. Programme also includes some innovative arrangements made by performers themselves of Shostakovich’s 5 pieces for two violins, Clara Schumann’s romances arranged for flute and piano and an Ukrainian folk song “Verbovaya Doschechka”.
